Frequently Asked Questions?

Do I need a certificate to ship dangerous goods?

Yes, legally you cannot ship dangerous goods by rail in the UK or overseas without sufficient training.

How long does the certificate last?

There is no expiry date on our certificates for the transport of dangerous goods by rail. RID chapter 1.3 states retraining should take place ‘periodically’ without stating a specific timeframe. We suggest training should take place in line with changes to the regulations every two years.

Does the course cover me to ship dangerous goods by any other mode?

Whilst rail transport is very similar to road, this course is purely focused on rail. If you need any other training you can view our full list of courses here. Alternatively, if you did want to look at combined training we can offer rail training combined with other modes on an in-house basis. Please get in touch for more information.

Are there any pre-study requirements?

There are no pre-study requirements for this training course, however, we recommend discussing your objectives with your manager before attending the course. It is also helpful to share UN numbers and details of the types of rail movements you use to move dangerous goods with the trainer on the course so they can personalise the training as much as possible.

I only ship small quantities – is this course right for me?

This training course will enable you to ship any quantity of dangerous goods by rail allowed within the regulations. It will cover limited and excepted quantities as well as COLIS Express.

Will this course include bulk and tanker shipments by rail?

Our Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail course includes transport of packaged dangerous goods as well as bulk, tanker and piggyback (lorry loaded onto rail wagon), movements by rail. The course will also cover shunting, marking and labelling and placarding for rail transport.
