Frequently Asked Questions?
Do I need a certificate to ship dangerous goods?
Yes, legally you cannot ship dangerous goods by sea in the UK or overseas without sufficient training.
How long does the certificate last?
There is no expiry date on our certificates for the transport of dangerous goods by sea. IMDG chapter 1.3 states retraining should take place ‘periodically’ without stating a specific timeframe. We suggest training should take place in line with changes to the regulations every two years.
Does the course cover me to ship dangerous goods by air?
No, this course only covers sea transport.
Are there any pre-study requirements?
There are no pre-study requirements for this training course, however, we recommend discussing your objectives with your manager before attending the course. It is also helpful to share UN numbers with the trainer on the course so they can personalise the training as much as possible.
Is the certificate valid overseas?
The IMDG (sea) regulations are the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code and apply to any movement of dangerous goods by sea.
I only ship small quantities – is this course right for me?
This training course will enable you to ship any quantity of dangerous goods by sea allowed within the regulations. We do offer a simplified excepted and limited quantities by air, road & sea training course. However, if you are just shipping excepted and/or limited quantities and they are only travelling by sea, we can deliver a further simplified one day training course on an in-house basis. To book or find out more details please do get in touch.
I only ship lithium batteries – is this course right for me?
This training course will enable you to ship any quantity of dangerous goods by sea allowed within the regulations, including lithium batteries. Alternatively we do offer a lithium battery course covering air, road & sea, that covers all three modes and focuses in more depth on the practicalities of shipping lithium batteries.
