Dangerous Goods Security Awareness Training
On October 14th 2024 the Department for Transport (DfT) published new guidance on dangerous goods security awareness training, making clear training is mandatory for “anyone engaged in the carriage of dangerous goods”, including:
- Administration personnel (e.g. those responsible for route planning and paperwork)
- Operations personnel (e.g. packers and loaders)
- Drivers (and any vehicle crew)
- Security personnel
- Senior staff with overall responsibility for operations.
The guidance is in addition to requirements for sites transporting high consequence dangerous goods. There are several key points in the guidance any organisation involved in dangerous goods transport should be aware of:
- Initial training should be given to all personnel before they carry out any duties related to dangerous goods
- Security training should be reviewed every two years
- Refresher training is required at a minimum every five years
- DfT may monitor the delivery of training where, in the case of inspection activity, problems have been identified. This will be carried out with the agreement of the employer / trainer
- Records must be kept by the employer (and made available to employee or DfT) for a minimum of 6 years
In response, we have launched a brand-new course, available from January 2025 covering dangerous goods security awareness. The interactive tutor led training will follow the requirements detailed by the DfT, designed to; provide a working understanding of the relevant security risk(s), and ensure all attendees understand their role and responsibilities in providing and maintaining effective security.
