Earlier this month, Nick and Sam from Peter East spent an interesting day at the National Courier & Despatch Association (NCDA) annual general meeting.
Invited as a guest speaker, Nick also judged and presented an award. Nick’s talk focused on how couriers can take advantage of business growth opportunities by carrying dangerous goods.
Nick explained that with some quality training in place, and a knowledge and understanding of the regulations, carriers will be able to transport dangerous goods in a range of quantities, which in turn provides opportunities to improve margins. The couriers can choose the type and quantities of dangerous goods they want to carry, and Nick mentioned a few examples of dangerous goods often moved in smaller quantities. These include limited quantities, clinical trial samples and lithium battery powered equipment.
Dangerous goods by nature require expert handling, and therefore courier companies moving these substances can charge a premium to do so.
The talk was well received, with several carriers present interested in exploring the potential of carrying dangerous goods within their existing networks and customer base.
