Frequently Asked Questions?
Do I need a DGSA?
If you consign or transport dangerous goods by road then you must have a dangerous goods safety adviser (DGSA). There are some exemptions including if:
– Goods only move ‘occasionally’
– Goods move in limited quantities or below the small load threshold in ADR 1.1.3.6
– Goods move only a very short distance such as crossing a public road (if you’re premises are on either side)
For more information or if you’re not sure, please do get in touch to speak with one of our DGSAs and we can work out whether you need one.
How do I book the exam?
The exam is administered on behalf of the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and should be booked directly with them. We recommend booking as early as possible to get an exam place at your preferred location. You can find more details about the exam and book your place here: https://www.dgsafetyadvisers.org.uk/DGSA
Is the exam included in the course fee?
The exam fee is not included in the course fee as this is paid directly to the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
What is included in the course fee?
Our course fee includes lunch, tea & coffee, and snacks throughout the five day course. Where required it also covers parking at the venue. Also provided are workbooks and revision packs to take away from the training course. You will need your own copy of the ADR regulations as you can mark this up with notes and take it into the exam.
What do I need to take the course?
You’ll need your own copy of the ADR Dangerous Goods Regulations along with a copy of the following:
– Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2011 (SI2011:1885)
– Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 (2009 No.1348)
– Carriage of Dangerous Goods: Approved Derogations and Transitional Provisions
– ADR U-Tabs (recommended but not a requirement)
All of these (apart from the U-Tabs) can be downloaded from the UNECE website and printed off, alternatively we can supply them along with the ADR manual.
Are there any pre-study requirements?
There are no pre-study requirements for this training course, however, it is advisable that all participants have some knowledge of dangerous goods before enrolling. If you are new to dangerous goods, we’d recommend taking our Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road course before the DGSA to get an understanding of the principles of dangerous goods transport. Having some prior experience or knowledge of dangerous goods, either from the workplace or training courses will put you in a better position to pass the exam. The DGSA is the highest dangerous goods qualification you can achieve, so going in without any knowledge of dangerous goods is a challenge, although plenty do pass.
Can someone else act as DGSA for me?
A DGSA can be appointed internally or externally. We act as DGSA for 30+ companies from a range of sectors and would be happy to help. We can also act as an interim DGSA if you wanted some support whilst you take the exam and get qualified. See our consultancy page for more information.
